The OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank is 26mm in diameter, and for this review I spent a week using it daily with the Limitless Arms Race box mod, the SMOK GX350, and the Lost Vape Triade DNA250 . In each case, the 26mm tank fits well, with no overhang. The proportions of the tank are such that in each case, the OBS V looked outstanding sitting atop the various mods.
The OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank is constructed with 304 Stainless Steel and glass. It’s available in Black, and ‘not-Black’ (Silver or Stainless Steel, depending on the vendor’s description.) with a juice capacity of 6mL. Interestingly, some vendors are stating a 5.2mL or 5.3mL juice capacity, and the official OBS website states 6mL. The capacity depends on the Coil Head used at the time, bear that in mind.
OBS includes 3 distinct coil-heads in the OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank package, the V12, the V8, and the V4.
The heating element (wire) is Kanthal A1, and the massive wicking is Organic Cotton. Optional Coils include a V10 OCC (Kanthal) and an RBA Head with a sizeable Two-Post Build Deck.
The package contents include a V12, V8, and a V4 coil head. Each of these, and the optional V10, are rated as followed:
- 15ohm V12 OCC Core – rated for 60-150W, recommended 70-90W
- 15ohm V10 OCC Core – rated for 60-100W,recommended 70-90W
- 15ohm V8 OCC Core – rated for 90-180W,recommended 110-160W
- 15ohm V4 OCC Core – rated for 120-260W, recommended 140-230W
All 4 coils are performance-orientated toward cloud production, using the “V OCC Coils System”. That said, The V12 is considered the “best cloud producer” Coil. The V8 and V4 are geared for a fuller flavor production, while still managing superlative clouds. The optional V10 OCC coil is said to be the best of both worlds, but if that were true, why make it optional? Why not substitute the V8 with the V10?
The Smok TFV8 has a 6ml juice capacity like the OBS V Tank, and the Smok TFV12 has a 25mm “base” diameter as the OBS V tank. But when comparing the performance, both clouds and flavor, the OBS V Sub-Ohm comes close to the TFV12 Cloud Beast, with a few differences.
The OBS V Sub-Ohm and the SMOK TFV8/TFV12 Cloud Beasts
Filling and refiling the OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank is not obvious when it’s unboxed, but it is easy. This tank is a side-fill tank, and to reveal the side-fill slots pull up on the top cap. Filling the OBS V is easier than filling the TFV8/TFV12 Clouds Beasts.
Maximum Airflow of the OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank
The massive Airflow for the OBS V Tank is caused by a Quad-Air slots configuration at the base of the Tank. The Airflow of any tank aids in both cloud production and allowing a higher wattage setting for the mod used. If there is a single element of the OBS V that stands out immediately after the first use, it’s the enormous amount of air drawn in by a firm inhale when the airflow ring is set to wide-open. But there is a downside to this massive air flow system.
The OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank lets in more airflow than either of the SMOK TFV8 or TFV12 Cloud Beasts. The result of vaping the OBS V with maximum airflow is a thinner, or less full, cloud production than either of the Cloud Beasts set to wide open airflow.
To produce the same thickness of vapor the user must stop down the airflow some, and this can cause a range of whistling from minor to annoying. The are no ‘incremental’ stop downs in the airflow ring, but with some work you’ll find the positions that provide thick vapor with little to no whistling.
For my personal taste, in flavor and clouds, I prefer the V4 OCC Core. This V4 is rated for 120-260W, and is considered constructed for flavor production. I found my optimal vape at 145W for immense clouds and the best flavor of the 3 other coils.
That Dumb-Looking Drip Tip
Lastly, the OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank comes with two drip tips, both POM (Delrin) drip tips. Both are excellent at keeping cool no matter how much wattage is passing through the coils. The first is a normal looking wide-bore drip tip, the default drip tip when you open the box. The other drip tip is the tallest drip tip I’ve ever seen. This tall drip tip has a built-in heat sink, and the idea is that when using the V4 Core at near maximum wattage (230W) the heat doesn’t reach through that drip tip to burn the users’ lips.
While I vaped most of the time at 145W. I experienced no excessive heat from the normal wide-bore tip. Still, wanting to do a complete review, I did take the V4 Core up to the 200W level while using the ridiculously tall drip tip and it works as advertised. I just don’t think many people will feel comfortable with this drip tip, unless the user is attempting a cloud chasing competition with the OBS V.
There is one element of the OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank that is an improvement over the SMOK TFV8
and TFV12 Sub-Ohm Tanks. The side-fill method is certainly an improvement, but from spending a full 7 days with both the OBS V Sub-Ohm with the V4 Core (and the other 3 coils) and the TFV12 Cloud Beast King with the V12-X4 Coil, I would have to give the edge to the TFV12 Cloud Beast King for flavor and cloud production. The competition was close, very close, so what it comes down to is the aesthetics of the two tanks.
More than a few people I know believe the TFV12 Cloud Beast King to be too big. For that reason alone, they won’t buy one or use one. This tank has a base size of 25mm, but the middle ‘glass’ size widens to 27mm, and the widest part of the tank is 28mm. The height of the Cloud Beast King is 70mm, making it a large Sub-Ohm tank.
The OBS V Sub-Ohm Tank is 26mm in diameter from top to bottom, with a height of 64mm. While the OBS Vis nowhere near a small tank, it is noticeably smaller in stature than the TFV12 Cloud Beast King.
For Sub-Ohm Vapers looking for something on par with the SMOK TFV8 and TFV12 models, the OBS V Sub-Ohm comes closest, at this point in time.
